The Girl Boss (A Poem)

The man wakes up,

He goes to work,

He thinks not of the future to come,

He laughs and kicks the preverbal can down the road,

He focuses on the here and now,

He waits for 5pm, and hurls himself into the closest bar,

He talks and laughs, and drinks till 6, then back to the office he runs,

He pecks away until 9pm, angrily typing and earphones blaring,

He pecks and pecks and pecks away,

Then time slips him by as it’s ten passed ten.

He looks down at his watch and says, one more minute, let me finish this email,

And on into the 11 o’clock hour he goes,

Not thinking of the past,

Not thinking of the future,

Just a happy hour finance bro,

Your future Prince Charming,

He’ll bend and sway to the trends of town,

But deep down,

You’re the one he craves,

He’s been there before,

In love with a perfect woman who might even look like you,

But all that high school sweetheart man, is left behind, and where is love?

A crunched up can kicked a few years down the road…

And where are you?

You’ve got your degree,

You’ve worked yourself to the bone,

You’ve got your sexy job and your cozy 401K,

But you’ve been waiting for your Prince Charming entrepreneur, who’ll be around on the weekends,

But pay the bills,

Who’ll raise the kids with you,

And make that million or two,

That guy will give you everything,

And ask nothing in return,

The plumber who makes a hundred K per year, not for you my dear,

You’re a lawyer that just made partner! Who would be seen with a blue collar man?

You want children,

But you don’t want to raise them,

You’ll have your nanny & house keeper,

You’ll have a three thousand dollar stroller,

But your kid will say mama,

…only after the Nanny  & the butler,

You’ve wielded your clout,

You’ve made your way,

You’ve accomplished so much,

But you fail to see,

That you too were enough you were…

The man does need a lawyer who made partner,

A girl boss with a big plan,

Or a fat salary & a condo in the city,

He just needs you, as god made you,

Fine, kind, nurturing & beautiful,

Your blue eyes will catch his eye,

Or you’ll be his brown eyed girl,

Or the baddy with jet black hair that drives him mad but makes him laugh until he cries, cause deep down you know,

That all you need to do is be,

Just be,

And be ready for him to come riding in on a horse.

Because true love, really is, once in a life time…
