Depression is... (A Poem)

Depression is something that happens, not something you do,
Depression is an effect, and a cause,
Depression is that gut feeling of hopelessness and gloom,
Depression is a sadness in your frontal cortex, It’s not a headache, just short of one though,
Depression is when you look out the window and only see the clouds,
Depression is that sigh looking downward,
Depression is when the love is lost and the sadness is over,
Depression is the culmination of a worst-case scenario,
Depression is when you feel alone even though your best friend is beside you,
Depression is how you feel after all else fails,
Depression is when you can’t help yourself,
Depression is a hill so steep it’s impossible to climb.
Depression is that smile you fake when you see those people,
Depression is that empty feeling when you go back home.
Depression is that tear in your eye, it’s been there for years but it’s starting to finally drip.
Depression is an umbrella in the rain,
Depression is the feeling of betrayal, guilt, and lost empathy.
Depression is apathy toward one’s self.
Depression is looking for sympathy,
Depression is a lie you tell to your friends,
Depression is a valley with a mountain ahead.
Depression is grey,
Depression is looking down instead of up.
Depression is the insanity of trying something a million times to no avail.
Depression is an expedition into your soul’s voice.
Depression is a wake-up call after a night of heavy drinking.
Depression is a necessary evil.
Depression is being happy & sad at the same time,
Depression is pure emotion,
Depression is a river of tears flowing through you.
Depression is not wanting to be happy.
Depression is transcendent sadness.
Depression is death of the ego.
Depression is a gaze into the abyss.
Depression is the sinking into a bottomless ocean.
Depression is the mind’s way of telling you to change your life.
Depression is calling your mom and crying even though you’re 29 years old.
Depression is that hug when you’re about to release but you hold on just for two more seconds.
Depression is that first time you cried from a movie.
Depression is the first time you said I love you.
Depression is an undescribed emotion.
Depression is to you as laziness is to others.
Depression is not knowing where to start.
Depression is wanting to curl up and hibernate until the storm passes.
Depression is holding on for dear life when every part of you is telling you to let go.
Depression is a bottle of dark rum after a girl turns you down.
Depression is calling your ex after a long time and having a sweet conversation.
Depression is looking at the clouds and seeing the silver lining, but crying anyway like there’s no tomorrow.
Depression is seeing the light but not the end of the tunnel.
Depression is a cocoon
Depression is giving into addiction, whiskey & cigarettes.
Depression is when weed brings you anxiety instead of a high.
Depression is your loss of words when your friend loses a loved one.
Depression is a journey that you ride through on a train, and if you try to drive the train you will only derail.
Depression is your soul telling you that you deserve better, and were meant to be better.
Depression is your potential screaming inside you dying to come out.
Depression is a bucket of jet black dye being stirred by a lady in bohemian robes.
Depression is a part of life, embrace it or it will embrace you.
